Solar panels operate through the photovoltaic effect:
Sunlight, composed of energy particles called photons, strikes the solar cells.
These photons are absorbed by a semiconductor material (usually silicon), knocking electrons loose.
An internal electric field within the cell forces these freed electrons to flow in a specific direction, creating a direct current (DC).
This DC electricity is then channeled through wiring in the panel to be used.

Silicon Layers: Most cells have two layers of silicon: n-type (extra electrons) and p-type (missing electrons), which together create the electric field.

Backsheet & Encapsulant: A protective backsheet and transparent encapsulant (like EVA) seal the cells, insulating them and preventing damage from moisture and humidity.
